SUPPORTING AGE UK EAST GRINSTEAD & DISTRICT

East Grinstead Business Association has chosen to support a local charity providing vital support to older people in the local area – Age UK East Grinstead & District.

Age UK East Grinstead & District offers a diverse range of services for residents of East Grinstead and the surrounding rural villages in West Sussex of Ashurst Wood, Copthorne, Crawley Down, Sharpthorne, Turners Hill, West Hoathly and Worth, including hot cooked meals every weekday, a range of exercise classes and activities, trips and holidays, a Help at Home service which helps people with cleaning, ironing, bed changing, shopping, etc., rural clubs and classes such as Tai Chi, Zumba, rambling, swimming and cinema, and a Carers Short Breaks service, which provides a more intensive service for people living with dementia and those who are more frail, which provides respite for carers or an opportunity to undertake activities together.

Please support older local residents by donating today.

Age UK East Grinstead & District offers services to residents aged 50+ in East Grinstead and surrounding rural villages in West Sussex. We are an independent charity, only using the Age UK National name under a ‘Brand Partner Agreement’ but responsible for all our own running costs and services. We currently have over 300 members.

Our current services include:

HELP AT HOME

During the financial year ending 30th April 2017, a total of 75 clients made use of our Help at Home service and collectively the Home Assistant team worked more than 3,200 hours in people’s homes.

Help at Home is available to people aged 50+ and for those below this age who are registered disabled and who need assistance at home. We offer a regular weekly appointment to assist with general housework, laundry, ironing, bed changing and unaccompanied shopping.

Help at Home is chargeable to all clients, but there is a discounted rate for members of Age UK East Grinstead & District.

Help at Home is a self-funded service, that is there is no income from Age UK National or other sources. The service therefore has to cover its costs and we require additional funding to offer this service to people at a subsidised rate.

SWAN MEAD ACTIVITY CENTRE

The centre is open Monday to Friday 10.00am to 3.00pm.

An average of 85 people a week use the centre, and we provide chargeable services, including lunches, drinks, bingo, music, chair exercises and IT classes.

We have guest speakers offering information on a variety of subjects.

Each day, a two course meal is freshly prepared, a service that is currently subsidised with grants from Mid Sussex District and West Sussex County Councils.

TRIPS, OUTINGS AND HOLIDAYS

During the year, over 550 people have benefited from Age UK East Grinstead & district trips, outings and holidays. We apply for grants to subsidise costs and to provide additional support for people with specific needs. Recent events include:

  • A trip to see Holiday on Ice in Brighton
  • Regular trips to the Greyhound Stadium in Hove
  • A guided tour of the Houses of Parliament
  • A boat trip from Runnymede to Windsor

  • Trips to the Posh Club in Crawley

We also run a range of local clubs and classes, including Tai Chi, Zumba, Computer classes and clubs for people who would welcome escorted outings for swimming, rambling or cinema.

We also run the monthly Cake & Company group in Crawley Down, in partnership with All Saints Church.

THE CARERS SHORT BREAKS SATURDAY CLUB & MONDAY CLUB
(TO SUPPORT CARERS OF PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA OR WHO ARE MORE FRAIL)

This service is currently subsidised by the West Sussex County Council Carers Short Breaks Grant. It is a specialised service with a higher degree of staffing, and costs £30 for a full day on Saturday or £10 for a Monday evening, together with £5.50 for a two course meal.

SIGNPOSTING

We currently signpost older people and carers to other services available. However, we will soon be setting up our own Information and Advice service.
