Rex’s Notes March 2023

Councillor Rex Whittaker updates us this month.

  • The first quarter of a calendar year is always very busy with councils , who are finalising their budget requirements for the 2023 / 24 civic financial year.
  • East Grinstead Town Council has a total budget of £ 1,103,894 which is a 1 % precept increase. Mid Sussex District Council has a budget of £ 19, 819.586  which is a 2.75 % precept increase. West Sussex County Council has a £ 1.86 billion budget which is a 4.99 % precept increase. For further details and analysis of all of these budgets please refer to individual council websites.
  • Mid Sussex District Council has recently awarded a £ 52 K grant to the East Grinstead Stone Quarry Cafe community kitchen in order to assist them expand and fit out their new premises where they provide a wonderful service to the elderly and vulnerable people of the town.
  • Mid Sussex District Council in partnership with private social provider Rentplus have recently completed the handover of eight new terraced houses at the Martins Mead housing scheme in Felbridge. These are all on a low rent basis with longer term options to purchase and further expand the MSDC portfolio of new modern day affordable housing.
  • East Grinstead Town Council have exchanged contracts to purchase the former St Barnabus Church building in Dunnings Road. Once completed and refurbished this will become a public building for low cost community use and hire.  Further details to follow in Spring / Summer. This shows the town councils continuing commitment to invest in the community and charity group sector.
  • On Tuesday 7 March East Grinstead Town council and the EGBA will meet with the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner and senior officers to discuss and review current and planned Police effectiveness in and around East Grinstead , with particular reference to the roll out of the new DISC technology reporting system for shops and local businesses.
  • On Wednesday 8 March Mid Sussex District Council will be holding an all day open public exhibition at the Triangle Leisure Centre to publicise the current progress and plans for a brand new centre for outdoor sport that will be constructed in Burgess Hill by 2025 , and this will be available to all schools and public within the whole of Mid Sussex.   • East Grinstead Town council Annual meeting will take place on Wednesday 22 March in Meridian Hall commencing at 6 pm and this is specifically designed for members of the public to attend and ask any open questions about any council related matters or  business whether it be Town council , Mid Sussex council , or West Sussex County Council.
